Li River Cruise

Brief / profile
As a major tourist attraction in Guilin, Li River is 437 kilometers long and the 83-km-long waterway from Guilin to Yangshuo is the masterpiece of Li River. It's only about 40 miles in length, but a Li River cruise is one of the most important attractions of any trip in south China. A Li River tour shows a different aspect of China for you can only see miles of rice paddies and fields full of water buffalo and concrete is nowhere here. To really appreciate the scenery, a cruise from Guilin to Yangshuo is a must and your voyage of discovery can be gernerally divided into three sections: The first step is from downtown Guilin where you board the cruiser to Huangniu Xia (valley). After you end your voyage, you can enjoy the natural wonder and local customs.
Upon reaching Huangniu Xia (valley) the cruise enters upon the second section. This is the key of Li River. You must be impressed by the wonderful mountains, clear water and the romantic legends.
Shuiluo Village is the third and final section that ends at Yangshuo. Here you will see water buffalo, ducks swimming and fishermen's boats. Also fishing villages, farmland and bamboos are on your side. This quiet rural scenery is really a sharp contrast to the noisy modern city life and you must have a totally new experience.

Situated in Guilin City of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, Li River originates in the Mao'er Mountains in Xing'an county running through Guilin, Yangshuo and Pingle, down into the Xi Jiang, the western tributary of the Pearl River in Wuzhou.

The river has been named as Gui Water, Gui River and East River in history. As early as the South Song Dynasty, Guilin claimed to have the most beautiful landscape under heaven. A lot of excellent poems and works on this charming river are still lingering in the south China for its long history and civilization. In November of 1982, Li River was listed as the first" National Key Places of Interests" by the State Council. In December of 1991, Li River ranked second on the list of "top 40 scenic spots in the country" declared by Tourism Administration of China. In November of 1996, Li River was listed as one of 13 National Special Protected Rivers. In April of 1997, Guilin---Yangshuo course was awarded "Guangxi Waterage Civilization Route" by municipality. In December of 1998, Guilin---Yangshuo course was awarded "province department level Civilization Route" by Spiritual Civilization Construction Committee of Municipality; Li River was evaluated as 4A state level sceneries in China by Tourism Administration of China. In January of 2001, Li River course called as" golden course" was evaluated as "province department level Civilization Route" by Chinese Communication Corporation Administration Association Tourist Waterage Board. In April of 2004, Li River Tourist Administration which was managed by Communication Administration of Guilin passed ISO9001, ISO14001 and OHSASI8001 certificate.

The key scenic spots of the Li River can be seen along the 84km waterway from Guilin to Yangshuo.
Each turn of the river will give the tourists new surprises. In the green forests on the left bank situates a village named Langshi Village. The houses are built with black bricks and red tiles there.
Nine Horse Mount is 61km from Guilin and 4km from Xinping(a small fishing village on the river bank). The cliff face has images of what look like a group of horses.
The most famous reflection of the mountain scenery along the Li River is Huangbu beach. The clear water shows a yellow rock board at the bottom of the river for about 100 meters.

Legend and Story
A legend about the Nine Horse Mount says the horses came from the heaven who escaped to the earth when Monkey King was not closely watching them. When those horses were drinking water by the side of Li River, a painter saw them and intended to draw them. However, the horses were scared and ran into the hills and then stayed there since then.
Another legend on seven fairy sisters--the name of a group of seven peaks on the bank near the beach says these sisters descended from the heavenly palace one day to visit the Li River. They were so obsessed in its scenic beauty that they forgot to go back to the heaven. When the King of Heaven knew this, he ordered them to come back, but the sisters decided to stay on earth. They changed themselves into stone peaks.

As for the transportation there, the bamboo raft is the main form.
The average boat tour will last most of the day, so tourists had better prepare to look for lodging in Yangshuo if you have no following tour plan.
